So instead of using a cookbook, I look in the fridge, see what I've got, and do a google search for those items + "recipe." That gives me ideas, and I experiment. A couple of things that turned out really well are below - I thought I better write them down somewhere, or I'd forget entirely. So here they are. I don't really measure stuff - I just use what I have or what seems right. "Season to taste" is my motto.
Sweet potato, carrot and broccoli soup
butter
onion
garlic
sweet potato(es)
carrot(s)
broccoli(singular and plural are the same!)
cream of broccoli soup mix
milk
cheese
salt
pepper
bay leaf(ves)
Fry the onion and garlic in butter until clear, add the sweet potato(es) and cover with water. Add the carrot. Add the broccoli, soup and cheese. Add the bay leaf, salt and pepper. Simmer until done. Burn your tongue. (that last part is optional, but pretty much everyone who ate the soup did - it's really good.) I saw a similar recipe that called for salmon as well, which might go nicely.
Pasta salad
pasta (duh!)
green pepper
daikon (or radish i guess if you can't find daikon where you live)
sweet thai chili sauce
rice vinegar
parmesan cheese
Mix ingredients together. If you didn't realize you needed to cook the pasta first, you shouldn't be allowed to use a stove anyway.
