No, I'm pretty sure I am a rain god - July 29

It rained all night long. I woke up around 5, and the rain took a 10 minute break. Which was pretty much it for the day. It always sounds much worse in a tent.

I got moving at about 5:30, but wasn't hungry that early, so didn't bother to cook breakfast as planned. Started hiking at about 7, and was immediately hungry. Curses. So I snacked along the way. The rain just kept pouring down, except for when it was driven horizontally. It was also joined by heavy fog and wind strong enough to push me over a step or two. Far too many of the strong gusts also happened to occur along narrow ridgetops...

At one point the sun peeked through to cast a rainbow, but mostly it was just wind, horizontal rain and fog.

My camera lens is quite thrashed - not only from water, but it's gotten a bit scratched as well - over the last couple of years - maybe time for a new camera...

Got to the top of Yakushi-dake at the same time as three older Japanese guys. Stopped at the shrine, and carried on down to the hut. Stopped in and had some snacks in the dryness, and also paid 500yen for a small coffee, which is actually not much different from the rest of Japan...

Hiked down the trail (essentially a creek) to Tarobeigoya at about 2pm, got into clean dry clothes, hung stuff up in the drying room for a while and stuffed myself with food. Waiting to see what tomorrow's weather will bring - if it's decent, I'll push on. If it's not, I can hike out a couple hours to Oritatte and take a bus from there.

how did we end up so different. there is no way i would keep walking in that rain. i would give up and go home.

if you're camera is broke i'm sure i would be happy to take it off your hands for you. i like your pictures so maybe your camera will make good pictures for me too.

there is no immediate giving up and going home...getting out involves several hours of hiking.
