March 30th

Nobody was downstairs when I went to check out around 8:30, so I headed back to the coffee shop for one last mocha and a piece of carrot cake for breakfast. Went back and checked out, and then walked over to the cooking school. Met a guy from Calgary, and we jumped in the back of the truck and went to pick up a couple other people from their hotels. After picking them up, we drove around for almost an hour (turns out the regular driver was off and the cooking instructor sort of got lost – I actually knew where we were, but we were in the back of the truck and couldn’t really talk to her) and then finally got back and went to a market. Most of the stuff was pretty straightforward, but it was interesting to see turmeric root, and the small Thai eggplants (which are green). Went back and did some cooking and eating, and a tiny bit of preparation – the staff did a lot of the chopping and curry grinding, etc.

After that, I wandered out to the station. I was early, so I sat in a restaurant with a cold drink and one of the books I’d picked up – Touching the Void – an interesting book if you haven’t heard of it. Headed over to the station for the 14:50 train, and sat around with the book (and an ice cream bar) until it actually left around 16:50. Talked a little with the lady across from me, though at first she thought I was Thai. After we established that I was from Canada, and didn’t speak any Thai, we talked a little in English, but she didn’t speak much. Had dinner on the train (again not really recommended) and had a good sleep for the night.

As always, the rest of the photos are on flickr.
