March 31st

In the morning, instead of getting to Hua Lumphong at 6:00 am, we arrived at about 9:00. Which was when my bus was supposed to leave. But that was running late as well, so there were no problems. We stopped about halfway through the 5 hr trip for a lunch break, which was when someone noticed the sizeable gashes in one of the tires! This picture is actually from the trip back a few days later.

Dozed and half-watched a couple of crappy movies on the way down – I Am Legend and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor or something. Don’t waste your time on either…! I got off the bus, followed the directions into the ferry terminal, and as I was looking for somewhere to sit for an hour until the next ferry got in, the girl at the gate waved me through and said RUN! The ferry was actually still there, and I was the last person on.

Once I got to Koh Chang, I caught a taxi into White Sands, and looked at renting a bike. But it was looking like rain, and I’d heard scary stories about the roads. So I took a sawngthaew instead, figuring I could always rent one in Ao Bang Bao. The road wasn’t bad, though there were several really steep and windy sections that would have been pretty sketchy, going up or down, even if it hadn’t rained. So I was kind of glad I hadn’t.

Once I got into Ao Bang Bao, I dropped by the dive shop (BB Divers) and then checked in at my bungalow at the Remark Puzzi. It wasn’t fancy, (no hot water or a/c) but it was a quiet, separate little bungalow a few steps from the water, and pretty peaceful.

I walked down the pier, with tourist shops etc. on either side, and wandered into a restaurant. Sitting at a table right next to the water, eating the steamed sea bass with spicy lemon sauce, and batterless “tempura” vegetables was really nice. One of the waiters was from Cambodia, and spoke decent English. We chatted for a bit, and then I went for a massage, checked email and headed off to bed.

As always, pics on flickr.
